Motorcycle parking in Liverpool
Free in the dedicated bays, and BANNED from pay and display. Liverpool is the strictest city on this list and the one most worth reading before you ride in, because a motorcycle is not allowed in a city centre pay and display bay at all. The dedicated bays are free and the council names where they are, so the trip is easy once you know the six.
The short answer
| In Liverpool | |
|---|---|
| Motorcycle bays we hold | 8 |
| Of those, recorded free | 1 |
| Of those, chargeable | 7 |
| Of those, customer or permit only | 5 |
| Cheapest bay | Free |
| Car parks that take bikes | 121 |
| Council publishes a motorcycle policy | Yes, quoted below |
We checked all eight of the bays we hold here. Exactly one, Mann Island, is on the council list and is marked free. The other seven turned out not to be council bays at all: six sit inside Liverpool Shopping Park and the seventh is marked customers only, so they are retail park parking on private land. Free while you are using the shops, and a private parking charge rather than a council ticket if you leave the bike and walk off elsewhere. The council position below does not apply to them.
5 of these are customer parking, private land or permit holders only. 1 says so on the bay itself, and 4 sit inside a car park that is marked that way. Being on the map is not the same as being somewhere you may leave a bike, and neither is being free: on private land the risk is a parking charge from the landowner, which cannot be appealed to an independent tribunal the way a council ticket can.
What the council says
This is the part worth reading, because it is the part that is hard to find. Everything below is taken from Liverpool's own published position, not inferred from our data.
On the street
- Liverpool City Council: "You are not permitted to park your motorcycle in Pay and Display bays in the city centre." This is the opposite of Nottingham and Sheffield, so do not carry an assumption into Liverpool from either.
- Liverpool City Council: "Free dedicated on-street motorcycle bays can be used at any time of the day."
- The council names six of them: Mann Island, Castle Hill, Exchange Passage West, Cropper Street, Old Church Yard and Jamaica Street.
- Liverpool City Council: this is one of the six free dedicated on-street motorcycle bays it names, and they "can be used at any time of the day".
- The six are Mann Island, Castle Hill, Exchange Passage West, Cropper Street, Old Church Yard and Jamaica Street.
- This is customer parking on private land, not a council bay. It sits inside a retail park, so it is free while you are using the shops and the landowner decides the rest.
- That makes the risk a private parking charge rather than a council ticket, which matters because a council penalty can be appealed to an independent tribunal and a private one cannot. Leaving the bike here and walking off elsewhere is the thing to avoid.
- Liverpool City Council's own position, free dedicated bays at six named city centre locations and no motorcycles in city centre Pay and Display, does not apply here either way.

Car parks that take bikes
We hold 121 car parks in Liverpool, and a car park always takes a motorcycle, which is the usual answer when there is no bay near where you are going.
The price shown on a car park is the car tariff. That is what the operator publishes, and it is almost never what a motorcycle pays. Plenty of councils let bikes park free in a designated area, some charge a flat daily rate, and some have a separate bike cage. We have not been able to confirm what Liverpool charges a motorcycle, so check before you pay.
